Understanding Fraud

Fraud can take many forms and is constantly evolving. It is crucial to stay informed and vigilant to protect your personal and financial information.

Common Types of Fraud

1. Phishing Scams

Phishing scams often come as emails or texts pretending to be from a legitimate source, such as your credit union, to trick you into revealing personal information.

2. Identity Theft

Identity theft occurs when someone steals your personal information to commit fraud. This can include using your credit card, opening accounts in your name, or obtaining loans.

3. Credit Card Fraud

Unauthorized use of your credit card for purchases or cash advances. This can happen if your card is stolen or if someone obtains your card information.

4. ATM Skimming

Criminals attach devices to ATMs to capture card details and PINs. Always be cautious when using ATMs and check for any unusual attachments.

How to Protect Yourself

Monitor Your Accounts Regularly

Review your bank and credit card statements frequently for any unauthorized transactions. Set up account alerts to notify you of any suspicious activity.

Secure Your Personal Information

  • Do not share your personal information over the phone, email, or text unless you are sure of the recipient.
  • Use strong, unique passwords for your online accounts and update them regularly.

Be Cautious Online

  • Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown sources.
  • Ensure websites are secure (look for “https://” and a padlock symbol) before entering any personal information.

Protect Your Cards and PINs

  • Shield your PIN when using ATMs or point-of-sale terminals.
  • Report lost or stolen cards immediately to your credit union.
